Spiritual Warfare Prayer

Spiritual warfare and spiritual warfare prayer are topics that have been discussed in Christian theology for centuries. Many believe it is a metaphorical concept that belongs only in the Bible, but this isn’t true at all. Spiritual warfare is very real, and there are many Christians who have experienced it firsthand, including Jesus himself! Here we will explore “spiritual warfare” and learn different ways to pray that will help protect you and your family by praying against Satan and his evil forces, so that you may live a life free from oppression and the chains of bondage.

What is Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare also known as “spiritual attack” is a battle between good and evil forces. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV).

It’s not something tangible that you can see with your eyes, or even something you can touch, but rather it takes place in the spiritual realm. Since time immemorial, this war has been raging on and will continue until Jesus returns to take His people home to Heaven. At its core, this fight is about who controls our lives here on Earth and ultimately our eternal souls. Satan wants to be in control, but Jesus has already defeated him through His death and resurrection.

We learn in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, & Luke that even Jesus had his own spiritual warfare in the wilderness with Satan himself over the course of 40 days & 40 nights. Iin the end we know that Jesus overcame Satan’s guile & temptations. “Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” (Matthew 4:10 NIV).

How Can I Fight Against the Enemy

God is fighting for us! The Bible tells us that you can engage in spiritual warfare through prayer. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11 NIV).

We are told to “take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:16-17). When you pray against Satan and his forces, below are some suggestions we hope will to help you in those prayers.

The principle scripture mentioning “spiritual warfare” is Ephesians 6:10-20, so below is the entire chapter (NIV).

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

How to Pray the Spiritual Warfare Prayer

There are many different forms of prayer that Christians use to speak with the Lord. Some people prefer to pray in groups, while others like having personal time alone with Jesus. Some might pray to Father God, some might pray to Lord Jesus directly.

One specific type of prayer is called “Spiritual Warfare Prayer” or also known as “Deliverance Prayers”. This form of praying helps fight against spiritual attacks and open doors for God’s greater plan to manifest in our lives.

To make the prayer even more effective, you can enlist the help of your Christian friends to cover you in prayer during these difficult times, often called “prayer warriors“.

“You should not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but you should encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)

Another good scripture worth noting, that mentions the power of spiritual armor to help us fight against spiritual attacks is when Paul says, “But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.” (1 Thessalonians 5:8 NIV).

We should pray fervently to help fight off spiritual attacks and open doors for God’s greater plan in our lives. Hopefully, with the help of these scriptures, you will continue to pray for the following things: protection from spiritual attacks, open doors for God’s greater plan in your life (specifically through getting married, having children, finding a job, etc.), and salvation of friends and family members who might not yet saved, or who are also going through something and need an extra prayer warrior.

How to Pray for Protection From Temptation

The most important part of spiritual warfare prayer is what you are praying for; it can be specific or general. For example, if you feel like something needs protection, then ask God in prayer that He will protect and shield your heart, mind, body, and soul from it, or if it is something more general, ask God for protection from all evil influences.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV)

Dear Father, I come to you today asking you to place a hedge of protection that surrounds me.  Father God, protect me from the enemy’s guile and evil temptations.  Father give me the strength to make it through today and to reject every dark thought and temptation that tries separate me from you.  Thank you God for your mercy and for making a way to you through Your Son, my Lord and savior Jesus Christ.  God I rebuke in Jesus’s name any forces who may attempt to distract me from living my best life, and turning away from sin.   God I pray you place your mighty armor squarely upon my shoulders so that I may stand against the enemy’s plots and schemes.  I pray God you place the belt of truth around my waist, and the breastplate of righteousness firmly upon my chest.  So that I may be fully armed against these evils in the world.  Father God I thank you for your everlasting Love, and for making a way for me to You through your only begotten son.  Father God today, here and now, I fully surrender to you and bow in worship to you, in the name of Jesus, and I give all my thanks, glory, honor, praise and worship to you!  Amen!

Ask for Your Family and Friends Salvation

Another common spiritual warfare prayer is for a friend or family member to accept Jesus Christ into their lives. Ask that they will be shown by God’s Holy Spirit all of their sins, so they can repent from them and turn to Jesus Christ for salvation. Ask that through prayer, you would have a heart like unto His in your own life as well. “Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23).

Dear Father, I bow to your glory and worship you.  I come to you today so that my dear friends and family may be protected against their own daily struggles and temptations.  Father God, I pray that you give them the strength and the knowledge, first to seek you out and ask for your forgiveness and then to accept the great glorious gift of your only begotten Son Jesus as their Lord and savior, that they may be saved.  I pray God that they may see their sins and turn away from them once and for all.  I pray Father God they come to know the feeling that comes with living in your grace and in your mercy.  This God I pray in Jesus’s name.  Amen!

Pray for Strength When Facing Trials,Tribulations, or Persecution

Pray for protection from the devil and his evil schemes. Pray that you would be able to stand strong against him, so he can’t get a foothold in your life (Ephesians 4:27).

Also, pray for God’s grace upon you when temptation comes, so it doesn’t lead you astray. The Bible says in James: “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” (James 1:13-14).

Dear Lord, I know you are with me, and if you are with me, no one shall stand against me!   Dear Lord, I thank you for your glory and your mercy!  I know you sacrificed yourself and arose from the dead to grant me the most glorious gift of all, my salvation.  Thank you, Lord for that most precious gift!  I now ask you Lord that you forgive me for my life of sin.   Lord, I pray in your name that you may give me the strength to face the trials and tribulations that await me on this day.  I pray Lord that when temptation is near, I have the strength to acknowledge it and turn away from it so that it does not lead me astray. Dear Lord, I completely surrender myself to you as my Lord and savior, I submit my life over to you and leave it in your most precious hands Lord.  In your name I pray, Amen!

Pray for the Fruit of the Spirit in your life

Pray for God’s will to be done, not your own. Pray that you would have a heart after His own and be obedient to Him as unto a loving Father. “If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15). Ask that He’ll take away any fleshly desires from your life, so they don’t influence you to be disobedient. “But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13-14).

Father God, I come to you as one who falls short of your glory and grace every single day.  I pray Father God for your will to be done in my life.  I acknowledge that many of my daily struggles are from my own attempts at trying to control things on my own, and not allowing or surrendering myself fully to your will.   Father God I pray that I may be shown and acknowledge in my life when things are going according to your plan, and that I may trust in your will for my life over my own.  Father God, please fill me with the fruit of the Holy Spirit, that I may live out these virtues and shine a light onto others, with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22) In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen!

If you feel like Satan is trying to oppress you or control your life, use a spiritual warfare prayer against him and his forces. Don’t let the enemy bully you into submission! Instead, fight back with prayer, as this will strengthen your faith and relationship with Christ and help prepare you for what’s to come. Prayer is a powerful weapon against the enemy and his forces!
